Tips for Travel with Cats

Traveling with your pet requires preparation. Find out how to travel with your cat while keeping your pet as safe and comfortable as possible.

If you are taking your cat on a long car ride, take the cat on some short rides until he or she gets accustomed to the car movement. Always keep your feline in a carrier so that your pet will be in the safest place in case of an accident, and so you do not have distractions that could lead you to cause an accident.

Make sure that all needed supplies are packed prior to your trip including food, bowls, water, a towel or blanket for bedding, treats, toys, a litter box (preferably the disposable kind), a first aid kit, and plastic bags. Consider using a travel water bottle attached to the carrier, or you will need to stop frequently to offer your pet water.

Try not to travel on days when it is very hot. If it is mildly warm, use the AC, but always check to ensure the pet is comfortable. Do not allow your pet to stick his head out of the window. Instead, leave the window open a crack.

If you must stop during the trip, never leave your pet in the car. Dehydration can set in rapidly in hot weather, or the heat could even lead to the death of your pet. Either take the pet with you or get someone to watch the pet while you are gone.

For airline travel, you will need to take your pet in an approved carrier. The definition of acceptable carriers varies by airline. Also be aware that some airlines will allow you to take the carrier on board while others will require your pet to ride with the luggage.

If your pet becomes frantic when traveling by air or car, you may want to consider sedation. Know that this medication can cause pets to get disoriented and remain so for several days. You may want to have someone take care of your pet in your home while you travel or take your pet to a kennel.

By keeping the above tips in mind, you should be able to have an enjoyable and safe trip when traveling with your cat.
