You may be able to ask friends or family members to care for your feline while you are gone, but sometimes they aren't the best choice. They could have cat allergies, not have time to visit your cat as much as you would like, or you may not feel comfortable with asking them for one reason or another. A professional pet sitter could by the best solution for you.

If you know high school or college students, they may be interested in pet sitting for you. You will probably want to talk with several sitters to get a feel for services offered, price, and for the best personality match for your pet.

Create a list of questions to use when interviewing prospective pet sitters so that you that you don't forget to ask an important question.

The following questions are examples that you could use for interviewing:

  • How long has the person been in the pet sitting business?
  • What hours is the sitter available?
  • How many times per day will your pet be visited?
  • Does the potential sitter own cats now or in the past?
  • Can referrals be provided?
  • Can you see his or her resume?
  • Is the sitter bonded?
  • Is the person willing to handle any special needs that your cat may have?
  • Can this person be contacted if needed?

If you find a sitter that sounds good, be sure to have him or her meet your cat before making the final hiring decision. You or your cat may not like the person when you meet him or her. You need to feel comfortable with the person that you choose so you can enjoy your vacation without worrying about your pet's welfare. Keep interviewing pet sitters until you find someone who is trustworthy and interacts well with your cat.

A search for a qualified pet sitter may take time on your part, but having peace of mind knowing that your cat is being well-cared for by someone who the cat likes is worth the effort.
