While some people may consider think it cruel to put your cat in a cage, it is actually important for safety reasons. If you were driving and your cat suddenly got trapped underneath your feet a serious accident could be caused. Also since cats are small, a sudden stop or accident could result in your pet be airborne and slamming into part of the car resulting in injuries or death. The safest option is to use a cat carrier when transporting your cat to another place such as the vet.
A good cat carrier should offer safety and comfort for your cat. It should be roomy enough for a grown cat to have some freedom of movement and be able to both stand up and turn around inside the cage. If you will be using a portable litter box for a long trip, make sure to get a carrier with enough room for it plus your pet. A carrier that is too big will allow your cat too much movement in case of an accident and could lead to possible injuries. Air holes on all sides are also needed as this allows the air to fully circulate, and your feline can see outside the carrier.
Cardboard carriers are not ideal and should only be used on a temporary basis. Plus, if your cat has an accident, the cardboard may get wet and leave smells inside your car.
If your cat has a favorite blanket, be sure to put this in the crate to give the animal familiar smells to help with adjusting the carrier. A blanket is also good to give your cat something soft to lay on. You may also want to put newspaper down if your pet is prone to accidents when traveling.
No matter which type of carrier you choose, make sure that you always use a cat carrier when transporting your pet in cars and other vehicles.
