Cats and Their Use of Scent
Cats have sebaceous glands in their paws, tail, chin, lips, and forehead. These glands secrete a scent that is left behind when the feline nuzzles you or scratches something. This scent is used for several purposes:

1. To keep other cats from using the same territory for hunting at the same time.

2. To see if another cat has claimed a territory.

3. To find mates.

4. To find their way home.

5. To figure out if another cat is familiar or a stranger.

Now you know why cats will come up to you and immediately start rubbing against you. They want to mark you as their possession!
