Cat History
The first pet cat was domesticated in the Nile Valley about 5000 years ago. They were probably pressed into service for hunting and rodent control. Eventually, humans became interested in cats for their companionship qualities, and people began selectively breeding cats to produce certain appearances.

One breed that can be traced back to over 1000 years ago is the Japanese Bobtail which was well-known in medieval Japan. Unfortunately, the breed is extinct today.
