Scratching is an instinctive cat behavior and one that they truly enjoy. Cats scratch for many reasons. One is for marking their territory. Feline paws leave behind the cat’s scent so whatever object is scratched will smell like your cat. Scratching is also a form of exercise for them. Find out how to teach your feline to use a cat scratching post.
Remember, that a cat’s idea of something good to scratch may be different than your idea. Do not make the mistake of buying an expensive jpost just because it looks good or matches your sofa. An excellent post will allow your cat to fully stretch her body and remain stable. If your pet starts scratching on ia post that subsequently falls down, you can be sure that she will not use it in the future.
After buying the post, your next step is to train your cat to scratch it. Do not force the cat’s claws to scratch the post. Try putting the post where your cat used to scratch. For instance, if she liked scratching your wooden chair, then put it nearby the chair. Other good places include close to your feline’s bed so she’ll have something to scratch after her nap. If you are lucky, your cat will start using the post. If not, you will have to be more creative in enticing your cat to scratch where you want.
For cats that are responsive to catnip, try rubbing some on the post. Another way is to associate the post with fun times. Put a few food treats around it or dangle some toys that will lure her to reach for the toy and unwittingly scratch the post. Remember to praise your cat every time she scratches your post so she will remember that scratching the post is both fun and pleases you.
Of course, you can attempt to train them directly to scratch the post. Give the order to scratch while pointing at the post. Then, each time your cat scratches the post, give her a treat.
When your cat starts using the scratching post, the next step is to prevent her from scratching your furniture. Cover your furniture with aluminum foil or double-sided tape since these surfaces are not fun to scratch.
By following the cat training advice above, you can teach your pet to use a cat scratching post and keep your possessions from being ruined.
