Fun Cat Toys that Don’t Cost Much

If you have a feline, you know that they love to play. You don’t have to go the local pet store and buy every toy in sight to keep kitty entertained. This article will give you several ideas for cat toys that you can make from items that you have around your home.

Aluminum foil makes wonderful crinkly balls. Roll them across the floor so that light gets reflected off of the ball to catch kitty’s attention. Ping pong balls are also fun for cats since they don’t spin the way other balls do so that your feline won’t know which direction to give chase.

A flashlight can provide hours of fun. Just encourage kitty to chase the light around the room. Lasers can also work, but you must be careful not to shine the light into your cat’s eyes.

Fill up a small bottle with rice and roll it across the floor. Cats like the noise and are likely to want to chase it. Just make sure that the bottle is light enough for kitty to push around.

A paper bag can also provide a great time. Felines like to crawl inside them and hide. Plastic bags should be kept away from kitty as they can cause suffocation.

If you have some yarn that you don’t need, roll it up in a ball and watch your cat play. They love to get all twisted up in the string. Don’t leave yarn lying around your house because yarn can cause major digestive issues if eaten. Supervise your cat at all times if when the yarn is out.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on cat toys to keep your pet amused. With a little creativity, you can find all kinds of items around your house that will provide hours of entertainment.

Is Your Cat Flea Collar Not Working?

Have you noticed that most cat flea collars do not appear to work or at least not for nearly as long as advertised? Worse yet, your cat is wearing something containing chemicals that are supposed to be toxic for fleas and might not be so good for felines, either. What are some alternatives to the flea collar?

Shampooing is one option, although most cats absolutely hate this. In fact, you will probably need two people to accomplish this, one to hold the animal and one to do shampoo the cat.

Yet another possibility are products that only stop fleas from reproducing instead of killing them outright. This needs to be applied to the cat’s neck area for several months before it is entirely effective. Even then, you may see a few fleas; they just won’t be able to have flea babies.

A daily combing with a flea comb is another alternative. Many cats enjoy being groomed, and you may find that you also enjoy this daily ritual. You will need to immediately kill any live fleas that end up in the comb, or they will jump away to infest your cat another day.

Your carpets and furniture will need to be treated, too. Fleas can jump off your cat and then live in your carpets and furniture until another animal or even you comes along.

Try the remedies discussed above to see if they work better for you and your feline before investing in yet another cat flea collar.

Designer Cat Collars

Designer cat collars can be found in leather, gem-studded, personalized, or many designs. Since every cat has a unique personality, you can find the perfect designer cat collar to help your feline express his or her personal style.

Dorothy Bauer creates beautiful designer cat collars by hand, ensuring that each piece will perfectly fit the recipient cat. Most of the collars are created from Swarovski Austrian Crystal in a multitude of colors which makes each collar a work of art. Can you imagine your cat sporting a 3-stranded collar made of crystals? Or maybe you would rather get simple and elegant choker. Besides collars, beautiful charms can also be attached to them.

Hand-sewn designer cat collars with Swarovski pearls and rhinestones are another option with colors ranging from pink, black to red with little roses sewn onto the collar and rhinestones wrapped around the neckline between the flowers giving it a romantic look. Personalized designer cat collars are popular – your cat’s name can be spelled out in rhinestones.

Lulu’s leather cat collars are simple and sleek. These designer cat collars are one thin, leather strap with a small bell located near the clasp. Each collar comes with several holes to make the collar fit perfectly. The bell is a nice touch that allows you to instantly know the location of your cat.

Choosing a Pet ID Tag

Since cats are prone to escaping outside, having a pet ID tag is extremely important. Unfortunately, very few runaway felines are ever reunited with the owners. Below are a few points to consider before selecting a tag.

At a minimum, a pet ID tag should have the address and phone number of the pet owner in a durable and legible form. Plastic tags are lightweight but can be easily chewed or broken. Stainless steel tags are durable and don not fade. These are the traditional type of tags and can purchased from pet stores or online. While inexpensive to purchase, the amount of information they hold is limited to the size of the tag. Also, for smaller animals, you may find that the available tags are either too heavy for your pet’s neck and that the ones that are the right size will not hold your complete address or phone number.

Other options in pet ID tags are now available such as microchipping, tattooing, pet registry web sites, digital display tags, and voice-recorded pet ID tags.

One of the newest products in the pet identification market is the high-tech USB drive that hangs from your pets collar or is attached to their crate that holds many megabytes of data including complete medical and diet information. The tiny USB drive is enclosed in a sturdy plastic case and can be plugged into any computer. There the information can be easily updated and printed to give to your vet or pet sitter.

Do not get caught up in which pet ID tag is best as any form of identification is better than none. You just need to do everything that you can to make sure your beloved pet is returned to you.

Are you planning to buy a new cat? Before you bring your new pet home, you will need to purchase cat training supplies so that you can begin teaching your feline appropriate behaviors immediately.

Litter Boxes
The most important item you will need to purchase is a litter box. You should have at least one box per cat in your household plus one more. Pick large, open litter boxes with deep sides so that litter doesn’t get kicked out on your floor as cats prefer this type of box. You may like the covered versions better, but many kitties will refuse to use them as they grow in size.

Scratching Toys
Cats scratch instinctually. If your feline has not been declawed or wears nail caps, you will need to provide a place for scratching. You will find an assortment of posts and cat furniture at the pet store, or you may want to make your own using carpet or twine. Place the scratching toy in a place that your cat can get to easily when the scratching urge strikes.

Beds
Felines prefer to sleep in soft, warm places which means they are usually quite happy to take up residence in your bed. You might not be so happy when you realize that kitty enjoys staying up most of the night and hopping in and out of your bed as well as leaving plenty of cat hair on your pillow. Find a cozy, soft bed for your cat.

Toys
Cats will find objects to play with. Your goal is to train the cat to play with those items that you have designated as toys rather than your breakables. Be sure to have an assortment of toys for your cat such as yarn, feathers, balls, and spools.

Cat Deterrent
To train your cat to stay out of and off of places that you do not want him or her to go, you will probably want to use some sort of deterrent. You could use a bottle of water to squirt your cat or foil on a piece of furniture. Commercially available deterrents are available that use odor, sound, or other methods to discourage the cat.

Be sure to have your cat training supplies ready before you bring your new kitty home so that you can immediately begin teaching your feline good habits.
