Cat Leash Training
The majority of people who own cats would likely laugh at the thought of putting a leash on a feline and going for a walk. Cats are so independent that it is difficult to conceive of tying a cat to something and instructing it where to go. In spite of this, some cat owners have been successful with cat leash training, much like dogs who are ltrained to walk on leashes.
Do not purchase a leash that is designed for a small dog, but instead get a leash specifically made for cats. These leads wrap around your cat, giving you control of the cat and keeping the cat from injuring itself in a frenzied attempt to break loose.
Teaching a cat to tolerate a leash is not easy. Success is dependent on the cat’s personality and how much patience you have for the task. Your cat may get upset on the first few attempts, especially if your cat has always been an indoor cat and has never been outside. The new sights, sounds, and smells may be overwhelming to your cat, and this is where your patience will be needed.
You may want to practice having the leash on your cat inside your home, although most cats will not be happy about this. Be sure to stay with your cat at all times when the leash is on so that your feline doesn’t get entangled and choked or hurt. If the leash isn’t tolerated indoors, try taking your kitty outdoors since the fact that your cat is experiencing the great outdoors may be enough to make him or her tolerate the leash. The cat could even get so absorbed in exploring that it forgets about the leash.
Be persistent when trying to get your cat to accept the leash. If your cat is just as frantic and upset by the fourth or fifth trip outdoors with the lead as it was the first time, then your feline is not likely to adjust to the leash. Then again, if you notice that your cat seems a little more relaxed every time you go out with the leash, then keep trying. You may find that in time, your cat actually enjoys the walks outside and even gets really excited at the thought of a walk.
