Unfortunately, other conditions can cause some of the same symptoms such as loss of appetite or dull coat. A vet should check your cat if you are noticing anything out of the ordinary behaviorally or physically.

Disturbances in blood glucose levels can also be caused by stress or other conditions. The vet will want to run multiple tests on your pet's urine and blood before making the diagnosis of diabetes.

Felines with diabetes are usually able to lead normal lives with treatment. Regular vet visits are needed along with daily insulin shots in the morning and evening. Sometimes the shots can be stopped whenever the disease is under control.

Your pet also may be placed on a restricted diet of diabetic cat food. If so, your cat will not be able to go outside where other food may be found, and you will need to be diligent about keeping your cat away from people food in your home.

Untreated diabetes causes coma and eventual death. Be sure to take your cat to the vet as soon as possible if you see any symptoms of feline diabetes.
