Is Your Family Ready for a Cat?

If you have children at home and no pets, you have probably been pestered to get an animal. Maybe you would like to have one, too. Before you decide to get a cat, you need to take several points into consideration.

Before you venture near a store or shelter and fall in love, consider the falling questions. Can we afford a cat? Think about food and litter expenses as well as veterinary care which can add up fast. Do you have time to meet a pet's needs and also care for your children? Who will take care of the animal when you are on vacation? Do you want a specific breed or a rescue feline? Where will you put the litter boxes? Do you want a young cat, a kitten, or a well-mannered adult which could be better for a first pet? Are any family members allergic to cats?

If you are still committed to getting a cat, you next need to decide where to search for one. A breeder is generally best if you are looking for a purebred. If you care nothing for breeds, then consider giving one of the many homeless kitties a loving home. Pet stores may not be the best source as many use animals from irreputable breeders which could increase the chances of disease and genetic conditions.

Before bringing an animal home, discuss how to handle and take care of cats with your children. Particularly, teach them signs that would indicate that the animal wants to be left alone to help avoid potential bites and scratches.

Even though you may plan for your children to take care of the pet, in reality, you will end up with some of the care. For example, your kids may have a sleepover or be away at school. And, your kids may not be as enthusiastic about pet care once the newness has worn off. Let your kids know what the consequences will be if they do not follow through with their promises to care for the animal.

A kitty can be a wonderful addition to your family. Your kids can learn about caring for a living being and about loving an animal. Just make sure that your family is ready for the commitment of caring for a new cat.
