How to Catch and Care for a Feral Cat

Stray cats are overwhelming shelters across America. Have you ever thought about catching and taming a feral cat? Since risks exist when dealing with these felines, use the following tips before catching your first kitty.

First, find food that will appeal to a cat that is aromatic such as tuna. Put the food inside a cage. When you see the cat inside the cage, quickly shut the door.

If you want to try to catch a cat, wear long sleeves to protect your arms and gloves for your hands. Put a pillowcase over the head of the cat so that he or she cannot see and place the cat inside a crate. If you come across an unattended litter of kittens, you may want to take them since the mother may have abandoned them or gotten killed.

Bathe the cat as soon as you get him or her home unless you have kittens along with a mother cat. In this case, mama will take care of kitten cleaning. Use a clean towel to dry the cat after the bath. Moisten a cotton swab with ear mite drops and gently swab out the ears, being careful to not go too deep into the ear canal.

Now, administer the ear mite medication as directed on the label, usually a few drops to each ear. Have some quick-stop available to stop bleeding if you cut too close, and trim the cat's nails. Put some flea prevention drops between the shoulders of the feline if you see any signs of fleas.

Keep the stray away from your other cats until a veterinary examination has determined that no diseases are present. Remember that taming a feral cat will take some time, including learning how to get along with other pets in your household.

If you cannot keep the cat, find a good home or take the animal to a shelter for adoption. If possible, tame the feline before taking to a shelter so that he or she will have a better chance of getting adopted.
