Cat Health Insurance

Are you considering purchasing cat health insurance in order to manage your veterinary costs? If so, your need to consider your options.

First, ask your veterinarian which types of insurance will be accepted. Many vets only work with one or a few companies. Even if another company would cover treatment anywhere you go, your vet will be able to help you manage costs better if he or she is familiar with the insurance company that you are using.

Also, check to see if where your veterinarian refers for emergency and specialty care. You will want to make sure that the policy you choose will also offer coverage at these offices.

Once your have selected a company, you will need to look at the available policies. Coverage may be offered for accidental injuries, but may not be available for pre-existing or inherited conditions.

You may also have a choice of deductible which is the percentage of each claim that you will pay. For example, you might find a policy that covers 70% of the cost and you pay 30%. The deductible amount affects the cost of the policy, so will have to decide whether you want to risk paying less for the policy with the possibility of paying more down the road if you cat has a major illness or injury.

Prescription medications may not be included in polices or may be available for additional cost. Meds can get very expensive if your cat develops a chronic condition such as feline diabetes. Other plans may not cover the vet visit, but will cover the cost of treatment. Still others will contribute toward wellness treatments such as vaccinations. In the case of wellness, insurance will probably not save much money but will make the payments manageable by spreading them over a period of months.

Pet insurance is a roll of the dice. If you have a cat that stays in perfect health, then your money will be wasted. If your feline ends up with a chronic condition or gets hit by a car, the insurance may pay for itself many times over. Consider whether you have adequate savings if your pet should need expensive care or if you would find paying in installments to be more manageable.

Cat health insurance can be a lifesaver for you and your pet if you have little savings and a feline who is facing thousands of dollars of treatment.
