What You Need to Know Before Breeding Cats

The United States is dealing with a huge overpopulation of cats, and many are killed every year because no homes could be found for them. If, despite this fact, you are interested in breeding cats, you need to understand the care involved for the pregnant cat and subsequent kittens.

First, make sure that your family agrees with your decision. They, too, will be affected by the many kittens running around your household, and their extra pairs of eyes will be helpful to make sure that no harm befalls the kittens.

You will need a good amount of space when the new kittens arrive. A tiny apartment would not give the kittens adequate room to play and explore.

Be a responsible breeder and have a home arranged for each kitten. You will also need a plan for what to do if one of your potential homes cannot take a feline as arranged. Would keeping a kitten or two for yourself present a great hardship?

Educate yourself on cat pregnancies, delivering kittens including cutting the umbilical cords, and kitten care. Prepare for an early delivery or the possibility of a c-section. Decide whether you will deliver the kittens yourself or get assistance from a vet or friend.

Cat breeding can be expensive. Not only do you have to buy food and litter for all of the new arrivals, you will need to provide vaccinations, de-worming, and other veterinary care. The mother cat may also need vet visits.

If you are determined to enter the world of breeding cats, be sure that you have the proper education, homes for the kittens, and the right supplies. Prepare for the scenario of having to perform an emergency delivery on your own. Then, enjoy your new kittens!
